Shah Rukh Khan was born Shahrukh Khan on 2 November 1965 into a Muslim family in New Delhi. Khan’s father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar. His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the daughter of a senior government engineer.

Khan spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore with his maternal grandfather. He grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of New Delhi where his father had several business ventures including a restaurant, and the family lived a middle-class life in rented apartments. Khan’s first leading part was in the 1988-starting Dil Dariya television series by Lekh Tandon. He transformed Dreamz Unlimited into Red Chillies Entertainment, adding his wife Gauri as a producer in 2004.
