It can be stressful and exhausting. If you ever have a course to study biochemistry or to prepare for any biochemistry exams, you will understand that if biochemistry is referred to as a monster of difficult subjects, there is no exaggeration! Students often lack a clear understanding of how to study biochemistry, and this confusion can affect their mood and willingness to study. As a biochemistry major, I have experienced biochemistry at two levels: at the undergraduate level and at the graduate level. I am going to help anybody studying biochemistry learn how to study biochemistry effectively and come out smiling.

Biochemistry is a challenging subject in medical school due to its hard-to-observe nature. Passing this subject requires having the right mindset and understanding of the concepts. You just have to be diligent in understanding the various concepts.

What is Biochemistry?

Biochemistry is a field that merges biology and chemistry to study chemical reactions in biological systems at the molecular level. It is an experimental science requiring unique instrumentation and covers basic concepts in any beginning biochemistry course, focusing on metabolic pathways in plants and microorganisms.

Biochemistry typically deals with the structures, bonding, functions, and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids.

How to Study Biochemistry Effectively: Simple Tips

1. Have a basic understanding of the concepts in biochemistry

The first and, in fact, the most important step for you to understand biochemistry is to master the basic concepts in biochemistry. It involves learning basic terminology and understanding biochemical processes. Take time to master biochemistry fundamentals. This will prepare you for tackling more complex problems later in your studies. With a strong understanding of biochemistry fundamentals and consistent practice, you will be well-prepared for future challenges.

2. Understand that Topics in Biochemistry Build on Each Other

Biochemistry is a content-heavy class with two separate classes: structural biochemistry and metabolic biochemistry. Structural biochemistry covers the 20 amino acids, DNA, and cell structures, while metabolic biochemistry focuses on metabolic pathways in the body.

Both classes build on each other, so it’s crucial to learn quickly to avoid confusion. To approach each class differently, you can use flashcards or redraw or rewrite pathways on their iPads. Weekly practice problems are assigned for both classes, and students should not procrastinate.

Apps are a valuable resource for studying biochemistry and are available on various platforms and devices. Comparing features helps determine the best app for individual needs.
